Malawi has a tendency of showering praises on international acts whenever they step into the country to grace our stages. We rarely commend our established let alone budding local acts for a job well done on stage. We often forget that every successful performer started from somewhere where they also needed a word of encouragement.
If you attended the recently held Tumaini Festival 2022 then you can attest to the fact that Dr Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Gwamba, Don Tarz, Blaze among others gave electric performances that Dzaleka residents and Festival goers will never forget.
Besides these big names, one up and coming artist, Peoples Emcee name dominated conversations among journalists and music lovers when it came to best stage performances of Tumaini Festival 2022.
Peoples Emcee music and set were both simply unique. He doesnt do typical popular genres like Hip Hop, Afro, Dancehall or Reggae. He performed Hip Hop fused with Hard Rock done in vernacular, Chichewa to the amazement of the audience.
Two songs titled "Love Malawi" and "Proud and Young" wowed the audience. "Love Malawi" is a song about putting Malawi first and continue keeping it a warm heart while "Proud and Young" is a song about consequences of the choices people make whilst young that end up destroying their future.
His new song, "Uchi" depicts the good things in life which end up being harmful because of the way people treat them. The song denounces practices like gender based violence, corruption and abuse of power just to mention a few.
Despite having performed at Tumaini Festival for 4 times starting from 2017 to 20/22, it was his first time performing on the main stage as Magetsi Band.
In 2018, he met Guitarist Arnaud Guignard, Bassist Alessandro Parisotto and Drummer Madalitso Symon Phiri at the Rock House, a music hub by Moto Buu Band in Lilongwe. They started playing together as Magetsi Band. He became part of it as a vocalist, playing their own original songs similar to what was dubbed "Collision Course" between Jay Z and Linkin Park.
Peoples Emcee started recording music in 2010 and he believes the talent is inborn. He has had a passion for making music since he was a young boy in standard 3 at Chilomoni L.E.A where they had music as a subject before it was taken off.
Peoples Emcee music is a breath of fresh air, especially to Malawi music industry sound which is, at times, too monotonous. Lets build a diverse industry and give a chance to those who think differently.
